In honor of National Doctors’ Day, Pristyn Care and Lybrate Data Labs have unveiled the results of an exhaustive study conducted among over 700 general surgeons across India. The findings illuminate pressing issues plaguing the medical community, including inadequate compensation, infrastructure challenges, and widespread burnout.
The study reveals that 65% of surgeons are dissatisfied with the state of the medical infrastructure in the country, and a staggering 86% express discontent with their compensation compared to their Western counterparts. These disparities bring into focus the potential threat of talent drain in the Indian medical sector.
Significantly, the study also found that 48% of doctors experience burnout while trying to maintain a work-life balance. Factors contributing to this burnout include demanding administrative tasks, lack of resources and support, and the mental stress associated with the medical profession.
Further, the study explores patients’ fears about general surgery. As reported by the surveyed doctors, the top patient concerns include pain and discomfort, potential scarring and physical changes, and complications from anesthesia. To assuage these fears, the study reveals, 60% of surgeons still rely on face-to-face consultations. Laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive technique, accounts for a majority of cases at 80.05%.
Dr. Vaibhav Kapoor, Co-founder of Pristyn Care, elucidated on the study’s findings, noting the comprehensive approach taken to understand the complex dynamics faced by surgeons in India. He highlighted the company’s commitment to prioritizing the holistic well-being of doctors by providing a supportive environment that fosters both personal growth and professional satisfaction.
The study underlines the importance of regular breaks and personal time in combating the detrimental effects of burnout, fatigue, and emotional exhaustion. As we celebrate Doctors’ Day, let’s pay tribute to the unwavering dedication of doctors and endeavor to foster an environment that bolsters their professional growth and personal well-being.
